About Korean serums and ampoules

Serums are the most concentrated part of a routine and the step worth spending on. In Korean skincare you will also see the word ampoule, which generally means a more concentrated serum aimed at a single job over a shorter course, and booster or shot, which usually means a small bottle of something potent you add to an existing routine rather than replace it with. The distinctions are marketing as much as chemistry, so treat them as a signal of strength rather than a different category.

The practical rule is one concern at a time. A retinal, a vitamin C and an azelaic acid layered on the same night will irritate more than they help. Pick the concern that bothers you most, give it eight to twelve weeks, then reassess.

How to use a serum

Serums go on after toner and before moisturiser, on skin that is still slightly damp. A few drops is enough; more does not work faster and mostly ends up on your hands. Press it in rather than rubbing.

Retinoids and strong actives belong at night. Vitamin C is usually better in the morning, under sunscreen. If you use both, keep them on opposite ends of the day rather than layering them. Introduce any new active on two nights a week and build up, and wear sunscreen daily while you do, because most of these increase sun sensitivity.

Frequently asked questions

How many serums can I use at once? One or two, and only if they do different jobs. Stacking three actives is the most common cause of a damaged barrier.

What is the difference between serum, ampoule and booster? Broadly a matter of concentration. Ampoules and shots tend to be more concentrated and intended for a shorter course or as an add-on to what you already use.

Retinol or retinal? Retinal converts to the active form in fewer steps, so it generally works faster and can be more irritating. Retinol is the gentler starting point.

How long before I see anything? Hydration serums show up within days. Brightening takes about eight weeks. Retinoids take twelve or more, and often look slightly worse before better.

Can I use these while pregnant? Retinoids are generally avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your doctor or midwife about any active before using it, and we cannot give medical advice on this.
