About Korean sunscreen
Korean sunscreen changed how people feel about the step. The older formulas most of us grew up with leaned on mineral filters that sat heavy on the skin and left a white cast, so people used less than they should or skipped days. Korean formulas tend to use newer filters in much lighter bases, which is why they behave more like a serum or a light moisturiser than a sunscreen. That matters more than it sounds. The sunscreen you actually enjoy putting on is the one you will wear every day.
Two numbers appear on the front of every bottle on this page. SPF rates protection from UVB, the range that burns. PA rates UVA, the range associated with the look of ageing, on a scale up to PA++++. Everything we stock here is labelled SPF50+ PA++++.
Sunscreen is one part of sun protection, not the whole of it. In Australia it works alongside shade, a hat, sunglasses and clothing rather than instead of them.
It matters most if you are using actives. Retinoids, vitamin C and exfoliating acids all increase sun sensitivity, so daily SPF is what protects the work those products are doing.

Sensitive and reactive skin. The SKIN1004 Water-Fit Sun Serum is built on 9,800ppm centella asiatica, the calming botanical the whole brand is based on. The Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh is alcohol-free, fragrance-free and essential-oil-free, which removes the three things most likely to upset reactive skin.
Dryness and dehydration. The Aqua-Fresh uses 30% rice seed water with panthenol and ceramide NP, so it hydrates while it protects. The SKIN1004 serum adds sodium hyaluronate for the same reason.
Oily skin and a light finish. The SKIN1004 Water-Fit is the wateriest of the three and absorbs fastest, which suits skin that finds most sunscreens too rich.
Wearing it under makeup. The original Relief Sun with 30% rice extract and a grain probiotics complex sits smoothly under foundation and is the most forgiving of the three when you layer over it.
Dullness and uneven tone. The SKIN1004 serum includes niacinamide, so it does a little tone work alongside the sun protection.
How to use sunscreen
Sunscreen goes on last in the morning, after your moisturiser and before makeup. Give it a couple of minutes to settle before anything goes on top.
Use more than feels natural. The tested amount for a face and neck is roughly two finger lengths, and most people apply about half that, which is the single most common reason a sunscreen underperforms its label.
Reapply every two hours when you are outdoors, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying. If you are inside all day, once in the morning is usually enough.
Check the UV index rather than the temperature. UV does not track how warm it feels, and in much of Australia it stays high enough to matter well outside summer.
Frequently asked questions
What does PA++++ mean? PA is the UVA rating used on Korean and Japanese sunscreens, running from PA+ to PA++++. Four plus signs is the highest grade on that scale. SPF only tells you about UVB, so the two numbers together give you the fuller picture.
Are these chemical or mineral sunscreens? All three use chemical filters. That is what gives them the light texture and the lack of white cast. If you specifically want a mineral formula, email us and we will tell you when we bring one in.
Will they leave a white cast? No. All three are designed to disappear on the skin, which is the main reason Korean sunscreen has the reputation it has.
Can I wear sunscreen over makeup? Reapplying over makeup is awkward with any fluid sunscreen. The practical answer is to press it on with clean fingers or a sponge rather than rubbing, and accept that you will disturb the makeup a little.
Do I need sunscreen in winter? UV does not follow the temperature. Look up the UV index for your area, and if it is 3 or above, wear it.
Can I use sunscreen with retinol? Yes, and you should. Retinoids increase sun sensitivity, so the retinoid goes on at night and the sunscreen goes on every morning. See our Korean serums and ampoules for the retinoid range.
