The Best Korean Moisturisers in Australia for Every Skin Type

Korean moisturisers for different skin types

Korean moisturisers come in more formats than most people expect. There are gel creams. There are milks, wrapping masks, capsule creams and two-in-one serum creams. They all behave very differently on skin. Picking the wrong format is the most common reason a good moisturiser does nothing for you.

This guide matches nine Korean moisturisers to a skin type. It also says who each one is wrong for. All nine are in stock. We ship them from our Sydney warehouse.

A note on the Australian climate

Most Korean skincare is made for a cold, dry winter and a hot, humid summer. That fits Sydney, Brisbane and Perth quite well. It fits Melbourne and Canberra in July badly. It also fits inland areas in January badly.

So most people here need two moisturisers, not one. Use a richer cream in the cooler months. Use a lighter one the rest of the year. Buying just one? Buy for the season you struggle in most.

Best for dry skin and a damaged barrier: AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream

AESTURA is a dermatology counter brand in Korea. The Atobarrier 365 Cream is its best known product. It is built around ceramides. It is made for skin that flakes, feels tight, or reacts to everything.

Reach for it when your skin stops liking products it used to be fine with. It is light on fragrance. It comes in a big tub. That matters, because barrier work needs a lot of product, used often.

Not for you if your skin is oily and you dislike a heavy finish. This is a rich cream.

Best for sensitive, reactive skin: Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream

People move to the 345 Relief Cream when nothing else feels comfortable. That is how it built its name. It is soothing and cushiony. It layers well. It does not pill under sunscreen.

It is a step lighter than the AESTURA. So a lot of people can use it all year, not just in winter.

Not for you if you want to see active work. This is a comfort cream, not a treatment.

Best for redness and blemish-prone skin: Dr.G Red Blemish Clear Soothing Cream

Dr.G is a Korean brand built around gentle formulas. The Red Blemish line is its best known one. This cream is for skin that flushes easily. It also suits the phase after a breakout, when skin is both sore and dry.

The texture is a light gel-cream, not a rich one. That is on purpose. Skin that is reactive and congested at once usually cannot handle a heavy layer.

Not for you if you want to stop breakouts. It calms the look of redness. It does not exfoliate or treat.

Best for oily and combination skin: Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream

This cream uses bamboo water in place of most of the water. It also has panthenol. It is light, sinks in fast, and leaves no film. It comes in a 100ml tube, so you get a lot for the price. Few light creams still feel like a real moisturiser. This one does.

Not for you if your skin is dry. It will not be enough on its own in winter.

Best lightweight everyday option: Anua Rice 70 Intensive Moisturizing Milk

This is a milk, not a cream. It is 70% rice extract. You pour it rather than scoop it. It sinks in within seconds. It leaves skin looking a little brighter rather than dewy. Use it when a cream feels like too much but bare skin feels like too little.

It is also the easiest one here to use on your neck and chest. The texture spreads a long way.

Not for you if you want one product to do everything. A milk is a light layer by design.

Best for firmness and mature skin: Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse

Centellian24 comes from Dongkook Pharmaceutical. That company has worked with centella for decades. The Time Reverse cream is the richer end of the Madeca line. It is for skin that has lost bounce rather than moisture.

Not for you if you are in your twenties and your skin feels fine. A hydrating cream would do more for you.

Best rich night cream: Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream

This is the richest thing Beauty of Joseon makes. It is built on ginseng and orchid extract. It works as a night cream for most people. Dry skin can use it as a winter day cream. It has a herbal scent. People either love it or they do not.

Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream jar with the cream texture

Thicker than it photographs. A pea-sized amount covers the face. More than that just sits on top.

Not for you if fragrance bothers you, or your skin is oily.

Best all-rounder: Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream

This bouncy gel-cream suits more skin types than anything else here. That is why we point undecided customers to it. It sits between a light lotion and a sleeping mask. Use it morning or night.

It also comes in a bigger size. That is the cheapest way into the Medicube range.

Not for you if your skin gets very dry in winter. Use it under something richer, not instead of it.

Best for uneven tone: Medicube TXA Niacinamide Capsule Cream

This moisturiser does two jobs. Tranexamic acid and niacinamide are both linked to the look of even tone. Here they sit inside capsules. The capsules break down as you apply the cream.

Tone work is slow. Twelve weeks of steady use tells you more than the first two weeks. Daily sunscreen is not optional alongside it.

Not for you if you want a quick result, or you will not wear sunscreen.

How to choose between them

Read down this list. Stop at the first line that sounds like you.

  1. Skin flakes, feels tight, or reacts to things it used to like. Get the AESTURA Atobarrier 365. Fix the barrier first. Everything else can wait.
  2. Skin stings or goes red easily. Get the Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream. Is redness the main thing you see? Then get Dr.G Red Blemish instead.
  3. Skin gets shiny by lunchtime. Get the Purito Mighty Bamboo or the Anua Rice 70 milk.
  4. Skin feels fine and you just want it to look better. Get the Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream as your base. Then add a treatment step.
  5. You care about firmness or tone, not moisture. Get the Centellian24 Madeca Time Reverse or the Medicube TXA Niacinamide.
Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream, a gel-cream texture

A gel-cream sits between a lotion and a sleeping mask. Not sure where your skin sits? This weight is the safest place to start.

Whichever one you pick, moisturiser is the last leave-on step at night. In the morning it goes second to last, with sunscreen on top. Want to see everything side by side? The moisturiser collection has the full range. The serum collection covers the step that goes underneath.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Korean moisturisers different from Western ones?
Mostly the range of formats. Korean brands make gel creams, milks, jellies and wrapping masks as well as normal creams. So it is easier to find a weight that suits you. You do not have to settle for one that feels too heavy or too light.

Should I use a different moisturiser in summer and winter?
In most of Australia, yes. Use a light cream or milk from October to April. Use a richer cream from May to September. Adjust it for where you live.

Do I need a moisturiser if I have oily skin?
Yes. Skipping it usually makes oiliness worse over time. Your skin makes up for the water it loses. Use a light one instead of skipping the step.

Can I use a moisturiser and a sleeping mask?
Yes. The sleeping mask or wrapping mask goes on last, over your moisturiser. Use it two or three nights a week, not every night.

What order do I apply everything in?
Cleanser, then toner or toner pad, then serum, then eye cream, then moisturiser. In the morning, sunscreen goes last. Thinnest to thickest is the rule that covers most cases.

How long should a jar of moisturiser last?
A 50ml jar used twice a day lasts about two to three months. Are you finishing one in a fortnight? Then you are almost certainly using more than the formula needs.
