Korean Toners, Toner Pads and Essences: What Is the Difference?

Title card reading Korean toners, toner pads and essences, what is the difference, over a swirl of cream texture

A Korean toner is a watery liquid you press into skin straight after cleansing to put water back. A toner pad is a cotton pad soaked in a stronger liquid. Most of them carry acids, so they are a weekly step rather than a daily one. An essence sits between a toner and a serum. It is thinner than a serum and richer than a toner, and it adds one more light layer.

The mix-up comes from the names. Brands call the same kind of liquid a toner, a skin, an essence or a first serum. The label rarely tells you what to do with it. This guide sorts the three by the job they do, then shows you which one your skin needs. Every product in it is in stock and ships from our Sydney warehouse.

What a Korean toner does

A Korean toner is the first thing that touches your skin after you rinse off your cleanser. It is mostly water, plus things like glycerin and betaine that pull water into the top layer of skin. The point is to put water back while skin is still damp, and to leave it soft and ready for the next step.

This is not the toner many of us grew up with. Older Western toners were built on alcohol and made to strip oil, and they left skin tight. Korean toners go the other way: no sting, no tight feeling, and a finish that feels like skin after a drink of water.

The Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner is the clearest example we stock. It is 77% heartleaf extract with panthenol and betaine, in a texture so watery it almost runs off the hand. The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Toning Toner is the same idea with 84% centella extract and a touch of PHA, so it smooths a little too. Both suit sensitive skin, and both cost $25 to $26.

Want something with more in it? The d'Alba White Truffle Vita Toning Serum Toner is a milky serum-in-toner with 2% niacinamide and white truffle extract. It feels closer to a light lotion than to water. So it works as a toner and an essence in one for skin on the dry side.

What a toner pad does, and why it is not just a toner on cotton

A toner pad is a round cotton pad that comes soaked in liquid, in a jar of 60 to 70. Some pads are soaked in a plain toner, but the ones people search for carry acids that buff off dead skin. That makes them a treatment, not a daily toner, and it changes how often you should reach for the jar.

A hand lifting one textured pad out of the open Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 jar, the acid toner pad in this guide
Seventy pads to a jar, and each one has a bumpy side and a smooth side. Start on the smooth side, which gives you the acids without the buffing, and keep the lid tight or the pads dry out.

The Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 is the biggest example. Each pad is soaked in 4.5% lactic acid, an AHA that loosens dead skin on the surface. It also carries 0.45% salicylic acid, a BHA that clears the look of clogged pores. Willow bark adds a little more on the BHA side. Centella, panthenol and allantoin are there so skin feels calm after.

The pad itself has two sides, and the rough side buffs, so it does some scrubbing on top of the acids. The smooth side is for a gentle swipe with the acids alone, and that is the side to start on. Medicube designs it for evening use, one or two nights a week, and you build up from there only if your skin is happy.

So a toner pad answers a different question from a toner. A toner asks, is my skin thirsty? A pad like this asks, are my pores clogged and does my skin feel rough? If the answer is yes, the pad is for you. But it does not replace the drink of water a toner gives, so on pad nights you still use the toner after.

What an essence does

An essence is a light liquid that goes on after your toner and before your serum. It is thinner than a serum, so it spreads easily and sinks in fast, and it carries a lower dose of actives. The classic Korean essence is watery, and the newer ones are milky or have a slight slip.

An essence adds a second layer of water and a mild dose of something useful, like niacinamide or a plant extract. It does that without the weight of a serum. It is the step that makes a routine feel Korean: layers of thin, light liquids rather than one heavy cream. You will also see "first essence" or "first serum" on some labels. Those go on before the toner, right after cleansing, and most of them are fermented.

We do not stock a product with essence on the label right now, but two products in our range do the same job. The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule is a watery ampoule built around centella extract, and it layers under any serum. The d'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum is a two-phase mist, serum over a light oil, that you shake and spray after toner. It doubles as a top-up over makeup during the day.

Choose a toner if

Your skin feels tight after cleansing, or you have never used a toner and want the simplest place to start. A plain toner is the safest product in Korean skincare, because there is nothing in it to react to. You can use it morning and night from day one.

It is also the right pick if your skin is sensitive or red. The Anua and the SKIN1004 toners are both built around calming plants, heartleaf and centella, and the SKIN1004 has no alcohol and no fragrance. Our guide to the Anua range and our centella explainer cover both plants in more depth.

Who should skip it: nobody, really. Even oily skin does better with a light toner than with none, because skin that feels stripped often looks oilier by lunchtime. If you do not like the extra step, the d'Alba serum toner covers toner and essence in one.

Choose a toner pad if

Your pores look clogged, your skin feels rough, or you get small bumps on the forehead and chin. Those are the signs that dead skin and oil are sitting in the pores. An acid pad clears the look of them better than any toner can. It also leaves skin smoother to the touch after the first use. That is why the Zero Pore Pad is the most searched product we sell.

Pads also suit people who like a tidy routine. There is no bottle to tip and no cotton to buy, you swipe and you are done. Keep the jar closed tight, because the liquid dries out if you leave the lid off.

Who should skip it: sensitive or reactive skin, a damaged barrier, and anyone already using a retinal or a strong vitamin C at night. Two acid steps in one routine is one too many. Start with a plain toner and add the pad later, once a week, on a night when nothing else strong is in the routine. Our Medicube guide puts the pad next to the rest of the range.

Choose an essence if

You already use a toner and a serum, and your skin still feels like it wants more. An essence is the layer that fills that gap. It also suits people who find serums too rich or too strong, because it gives a lower dose of the same kind of things.

The bottle holds two layers, a clear serum over a thin oil, so shake it until they mix before each spray. The 50ml fits a bag.

The spray is the easiest way to try the step. The d'Alba mist takes five seconds after toner in the morning. You can also keep it in a bag for a top-up at 3pm, when office air leaves skin tight. Dry skin gets the most out of it, but combo skin likes it too, because the oil layer is very light.

Who should skip it: anyone still building the basics. If you do not yet have a cleanser, a toner, a cream and a sunscreen you are happy with, the essence can wait. It is the step you add to a routine that already works, not the one you start with.

Can you use all three together?

Yes, and the order is simple. Thin goes before thick. So after cleansing it runs toner, then essence, then serum, then cream, with sunscreen last in the morning. Our cleansing guide covers the two steps before the toner.

The toner pad changes that order on the nights you use it. It goes first, straight after cleansing on dry skin, because the acids need clean skin to work on. Wait a minute, then follow with the toner, and then the rest as normal. Skip the essence and any other active that night if your skin is new to acids.

A full week might look like this. Every morning and night: toner, essence if you have one, serum, cream. One or two nights a week: swap the serum for the Zero Pore Pad, used before the toner, and keep the rest gentle. That is the whole system, and it costs less than $80 to set up with the products in this guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a toner pad instead of a toner?
Not every day. An acid pad like the Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 is a treatment for one or two nights a week. It does not put water back the way a toner does. Use the pad first on those nights, then follow with your normal toner.

Do I need both a toner and an essence?
No, a toner is the one to have. An essence is an extra layer for skin that wants more, or for people who find serums too strong. If you only want one product, a serum-toner like the d'Alba Vita Toning Serum Toner covers both jobs.

How often should I use the Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0?
Start with one night a week on the smooth side of the pad, and move to two nights if your skin stays calm. Use it in the evening on clean, dry skin. Do not pair it with a retinal or a strong vitamin C on the same night.

What order do toner, essence and serum go in?
Toner first, then essence, then serum, then cream. The rule is thin before thick. In the morning, sunscreen goes on last.

Which Korean toner is best for sensitive skin?
The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Toning Toner, because it is 84% centella extract with no alcohol and no fragrance. The Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner is the other safe pick, and it is the one to choose if your skin also runs oily.

Is an essence the same as a serum?
No, an essence is thinner and carries a lower dose of actives, so it is more about water. A serum is stronger and aims at one thing, like tone or texture. An essence goes on before a serum.
